Weaving the Waves: our surf road trip begins... from Vancouver Island to Guatemala

Today marks the beginning of a new adventure.

“Weaving the Waves” a road trip adventure starting from Vancouver Island in the legendary Bumbleghini, Richard is making his way south through Washington, Oregon, California, Mexico, and eventually Guatemala… documenting surf breaks, meeting people along the way, and sharing the wild beauty of the journey in real time.

This project is rooted in everything we love: surfing, storytelling, community, photography, film, and the weaving together of cultures, art, and experience through Sunrise Sessions.

Day 1: May 15, 2026

Elinor moved into Dianne, our little cabin in the woods back home in Ucluelet. The fire was lit as I re-packed my bags twice over… and then again before she came. The rain was steady as I gave her a raincoat and showed her around our little community. The rain was steadier than I was, but through the support of my homies, I pushed through my rare case of nervous anxiety.

Another rarity in my life is being completely organized for an event. The house was dude-clean, and Elinor was excited for her summer in Tofino. I was also excited for the road trip to Guatemala’s coastline in the Bumbleghini. I bought her four years ago for 800 bucks, but she has weathered many road trips and daily driving with almost negligent amounts of maintenance. From Malibu, California to Halifax, Nova Scotia, she loves to rally.

We had just finished the event scaffolding for the Canadian Shortboard Nationals, and I was stoked to bring the livestream to CSA Surf Canada’s YouTube page with my diligent filming all weekend.

Since living in Mexico years ago and dreaming of turning my surf bum lifestyle into a professional surf bum status, I’ve built a business focused on helping the average surfer improve and document their journey. I completed my ISA Surf Coaching Level 1 certification and I’m now working toward Level 2.

We also teamed up with SurfCloud.net and built our own page to document the stories to come! We will be sharing surf content, as well as offering our content at a discounted rate when you purchase one of our handwoven bucket hats!

Teaming up with Amy has brought a lot of inspiration and accountability into my life. She has been learning to hand weave and dye natural fibres as her heritage and ancestors have done for generations in Guatemala... and now we have integrated this into our own Mayan-inspired clothing line Saqarik, which means Sunrise in Kaq'chikel.

We’re excited to share this journey through surf content, our Mayan-inspired clothing line, and the many wild stories that have brought us to where we are today.

I hope you enjoy following along as I make my way south from Vancouver Island, Canada, down the Pacific Coast through Washington, Oregon, California, Mexico, and finally Guatemala.

I’ll be filming every surf break I can find and posting content as soon as I can find some WiFi!

You can follow along on Instagram, Facebook, SurfCloud.net, and our blog at SunriseSessions.net.
